Dental Braces

Dental braces are a popular treatment option for people of all ages who want to improve the appearance and function of their teeth.

Braces work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the desired position. There are many different types of braces available today, each with their own unique benefits and drawbacks.

In this page, we will discuss the different types of braces, how they work, and the benefits of undergoing orthodontic treatment.

How Braces Work

Braces  work on the principle of applying pressure on teeth.

-Pressure is applied to the connective tissue (periodontal ligament) that holds the tooth in place

-This pressure causes cells that shape and reshape the bone (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) to work

-Osteoblasts create new bone while osteoclasts remove old bone

-Pressure from the braces causes bone to be built up in the direction that the tooth needs to move and removed in the opposite direction

Over time, this process causes the tooth to move into the desired position.

Benefits of Braces

-Orthodontic treatment can improve the health of teeth and gums

-Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean and maintain, reducing risk of tooth decay and gum disease

-Straight and properly aligned bite reduces stress on jaw, leading to less headaches and jaw pain

-Braces can give a more attractive smile, boosting self-confidence and self-esteem.

At Center for Dental Implants & Esthetics we recommend only branded braces like 3M, Ormco Damon and Forestadent

Metal Braces

These are the most common type of braces and are made of metal brackets and wires. They are highly effective in straightening teeth, but are also the most noticeable type of braces.

Pros: They are very effective in straightening teeth, and can be used to correct most orthodontic issues.

Cons: They are the most noticeable type of braces, and can be uncomfortable to wear.

Ceramic Braces

These braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but they use clear ceramic brackets instead of metal ones. Easier on gums, they are less noticeable than metal braces but can stain with excessing use of cola or coffee.

Pros: They are less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Acquire lesser plaque during treatment

Cons: They cost more than the metal braces

Self Ligating Braces

They use a clip or gate instead of traditional elastic bands to hold the wire in place.  The clip or gate allows the wire to move more freely, which leads to faster treatment.

Self-ligating braces can be metal or clear ceramic.

Pros: More comfortable, shorter treatment time

Cons: Costlier than regular braces
