Jaw & Bite Correction
Using Orthodontic Appliances

Never Delay Correction! It Works Best in Early Years

Orthodontic Appliances for Jaw Alignment and Bite Correction

Orthodontic treatment can help correct a misaligned jaw and bite issues by gradually moving the teeth as well as pulling the jaw in desired position. This a non surgical, non-invasive method of jaw alignment.

There are several orthodontic treatment options that can be used for jaw alignment and bite correction, including:

Traditional Braces : Traditional metal braces use brackets and wires to apply pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the correct position.

Clear Aligners : Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, use a series of custom-fit plastic trays to apply pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them into the correct position.

Jaw Expansion Appliances : These appliances are used to widen the upper jaw, to correct bite issues caused by a narrow upper jaw.

Functional Appliances  : These appliances are used to guide the growth of the jaw, to correct bite issues caused by an underdeveloped jaw.

Jaw Correction Appliances

Jaw Appliances are devices used to correct jaw misalignment and bite issues by applying pressure to the jaw and guiding its growth or movement.

There are several types of jaw appliances that can be used for different types of corrections and at different stages of treatment.

Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE)  : An RPE is a device that is attached to the upper molars and activated by turning a key to widen the upper jaw. This type of appliance is used to correct a narrow upper jaw and crossbite. Treatment usually takes around 6-9 months.

Herbst Appliance : The Herbst appliance is a fixed functional device that attaches to the molars and connects to a metal bar that extends down to the lower jaw. It works by guiding the growth of the lower jaw forward. This type of appliance is used to correct a recessed lower jaw and an overbite. Treatment usually takes around 9-12 months.

Twin Block Appliance : The Twin Block appliance is a removable functional device that is worn in the upper and lower jaw. It works by repositioning the lower jaw forward and the upper jaw back. This type of appliance is used to correct a recessed lower jaw, an overbite, and open bite. Treatment usually takes around 9-12 months.

Frankel Appliance : The Frankel appliance is a fixed functional device that attaches to the molars and connects to a metal bar that extends up to the palate. It works by guiding the growth of the upper jaw forward. This type of appliance is used to correct a recessed upper jaw, underbite, and open bite. Treatment usually takes around 9-12 months.

It's important to note that the duration of treatment will vary depending on the type and severity of the jaw misalignment or bite issue, as well as the patient's age, growth and cooperation. Our orthodontist will be able to provide a more accurate treatment time after evaluating the patient's condition.

In most cases, jaw appliances are used in conjunction with traditional braces or clear aligners to achieve the best results.

After the treatment, you may need to wear retainers to hold your teeth and jaw in the correct position and prevent them from shifting back to their original position.

Orthodontic/Myofunctional Appliances

Orthodontic appliances are devices that are used in conjunction with traditional braces or clear aligners to help correct jaw misalignment and bite issues. These appliances are designed to apply pressure to specific areas of the jaw, teeth, or gums in order to guide the movement of the teeth and jaw into the correct position.

Some of the most common orthodontic appliances include:

Headgear : Headgear is an external appliance that attaches to the braces and applies pressure to the upper jaw to guide the growth and reposition the jaw. It is typically worn at night or during certain periods of the day and is used to correct overbites or underbites.

Lip Bumper : A lip bumper is a plastic device that sits inside the upper or lower lip and attaches to the braces. It works by pushing the back teeth apart to make room for the front teeth, which helps to correct crowding or spacing issues.

Palatal Expander : A palatal expander is a device that sits on the roof of the mouth and attaches to the braces. It is activated by turning a key, which widens the palate and makes room for the teeth. It is used to correct a narrow upper jaw and crossbite.

Distal Jet : A distal jet is an appliance that attaches to the back molars and pushes them forward to correct a recessed lower jaw and overbite.

Reverse Pull Headgear : A reverse pull headgear is an external appliance that attaches to the braces and applies pressure to the back of the upper jaw to guide the growth and reposition the jaw. It is typically worn at night or during certain periods of the day and is used to correct underbites or recessed upper jaws.

Twin Block Appliance : A twin block appliance is a removable functional device that is worn in the upper and lower jaw. It works by repositioning the lower jaw forward and the upper jaw back. This type of appliance is used to correct a recessed lower jaw, an overbite, and open bite.

Tongue crib : A tongue crib is a small metal device that sits on the roof of the mouth and attaches to the braces. It prevents the tongue from pressing against the back of the front teeth, which can cause the teeth to shift out of position. It is used to correct an open bite.

Transpalatal Arch (TPA) : A TPA is a wire that is placed across the roof of the mouth, connecting the molars. It works by pushing the molars together and maintaining the arch form of the upper jaw. It is used to correct a narrow upper jaw, crossbite, and to prevent the molars from drifting during treatment.

Nance Appliance : A Nance appliance is a device that sits on the roof of the mouth and attaches to the molars. It works by holding the molars in place and preventing them from drifting while the front teeth are being moved. It is used to correct a crossbite or to prevent the molars from drifting during treatment.

Bionator : A Bionator is a removable functional appliance that sits in the roof of the mouth and attaches to the molars. It works by repositioning the lower jaw forward and the upper jaw back. This type of appliance is used to correct a recessed lower jaw, an overbite, and open bite.

Forsus Appliance : A Forsus appliance is a device that attaches to the braces and extends from the upper molars to the lower jaw. It works by pushing the lower jaw forward and correcting an overbite.

These are just a few examples of the many different types of orthodontic appliances that are available. The type of appliance that is best for you will depend on the severity of your misalignment or bite issue, as well as your personal preferences.

Our orthodontists will be able to evaluate your condition, diagnose any underlying issues, and recommend the best course of treatment for you.

With the help of jaw alignment treatment, you can correct your misaligned jaw, relieve pain and discomfort, and restore proper function to your jaw.
