Root Canal Therapy (also known as Root Canal Treatment or RCT) is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth. Here’s a breakdown of what it involves:
When the inner part of the tooth (the pulp), which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or cracks, root canal therapy is needed to remove the infected tissue and save the tooth.
Cleaning the Canals: The infected pulp inside the tooth's canals is carefully removed. This can be done manually using hand tools or with modern machines, which offer precision.
Shaping the Canals: After the infected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned, shaped, and prepared for filling.
Filling the Canals: The cleaned canals are then filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, to seal the space and prevent further infection.
Crowning the Tooth: After the canal is sealed, the tooth is typically restored with a crown or cap to protect it and restore its strength.
Root Canal Therapy relieves pain, saves the tooth, and prevents the infection from spreading.
The entire root canal procedure, including placing a crown, typically requires three visits.
First Visit:
Cleaning the root canals to relieve pain. If the infection is mild, the canals are sealed in this step.
Duration: 45-50 minutes
Wait Period:
3-4 days or until the pain subsides.
Second Visit:
For cases with severe infection, the root canals are sealed during this visit. The tooth is then shaped, and an impression is taken for the crown.
Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours
Wait Period:
4-5 business days for the crown/cap to be made in the lab.
Third Visit:
This is the final visit, where the crown is permanently placed on the tooth.
Duration: 20-30 minutes
Here are common symptoms that indicate you may need a Root Canal Treatment (RCT):
Persistent Tooth Pain: Constant or recurring pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure to the tooth, may indicate the need for a root canal.
Sensitivity to Hot and Cold: If your tooth has prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks, it could be a sign of nerve damage or infection.
Swollen or Tender Gums: Swelling, tenderness, or a small pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth may indicate an underlying infection.
Discoloration of the Tooth: A tooth becoming darker or discolored could signal that the inner nerves and blood vessels are damaged.
Deep Decay or Cracks: A tooth with deep decay, cracks, or damage can allow bacteria to enter the pulp, requiring a root canal to save the tooth.
Pain When Touching the Tooth: If your tooth is painful to touch or tap, it may indicate inflammation or infection in the tooth's pulp.
If you're experiencing these symptoms, consult a dentist promptly to avoid further complications and potential tooth loss.
Toothache often feels worse at night for several reasons:
Blood Flow: When you lie down, more blood flows to your head, increasing pressure in sensitive areas like an infected or inflamed tooth. This can amplify the pain.
Fewer Distractions: During the day, you’re usually busy with activities that distract you from the pain. At night, when it's quiet and you're less active, you're more likely to notice and feel the pain more intensely.
Positioning: Lying flat can cause the tooth to throb more due to increased blood flow, putting pressure on nerves and tissues around the tooth.
Hormonal Changes: Some people experience hormonal fluctuations that can heighten their pain perception during the night.
If tooth pain increases at night, it's a sign that you should consult a dentist, as it could indicate an infection or underlying issue that needs treatment.
Yes, root canal treatment can often be completed in a single visit if the infection and discomfort are mild.
However, if there is a more severe infection that has spread beyond the tooth into the bone, it is advisable to clean the infection and allow time for healing. In such cases, antibiotics are typically prescribed to control and treat the infection.
Once the pain and inflammation subside, the procedure can be completed safely and effectively.
Root canal treatment (RCT) is generally painless, as it is performed under local anesthesia. However, some discomfort may occur afterward as the body continues to clear the infection.
This discomfort usually lasts up to two days but is manageable with medication if needed.
Yes, Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a safe and routine procedure. It has been practiced for decades to save teeth that are infected or damaged. Here’s why it’s considered safe:
Pain-Free with Anesthesia: The procedure is done under local anesthesia, ensuring that patients feel minimal to no pain during the treatment.
Highly Effective: RCT removes the infected pulp from inside the tooth, eliminating pain and stopping the infection from spreading. It allows patients to keep their natural tooth instead of opting for extraction.
Safe Materials Used: The materials used for sealing the root canals, like gutta-percha, are biocompatible and have been proven safe for long-term use.
Preserves Natural Tooth: By removing the infection and sealing the tooth, RCT prevents the need for extraction, which helps maintain your natural bite and jaw structure.
Post-Treatment Care: While there might be some minor discomfort after the procedure, it’s manageable with medication and subsides in a few days. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups ensure the treated tooth remains healthy.
With proper care and skilled hands, root canal treatment is a safe and highly successful way to save your tooth.
Root Canal Treatment : Primary purpose of this tooth treatment is cleaning of root canal infection and relieving of root canal pain. It can be done for adults as well as Kids.
How Can Infection Reach the Canals of Root?
Infection can reach the root canals through dental decay, tooth fracture, untreated trauma, gum disease, failed dental treatment, or tooth abscess..
Is Root Canal a Surgery?
No it is not a surgery and also it is not an invasive procedure.
To access the infected canals, tooth is hollowed out in the middle, it becomes brittle and can not take load like a natural tooth.
Also, with no veins to supply nourishment thru the core, tooth is supported from outside only.
Hence its is important to cover the tooth with crown or cap else the tooth may crack or fracture.
