What are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants are an integrated solution for missing teeth. It uses a metal fixture, surgically placed in the jaw bone, when bone grows around it, cap or dental crown is fixed over it.
Parts of a Dental Implant
A typical dental implant is made up of 02 pieces both are made of Titanium. Abutment receives the crown and fits over post which is submerged in bone.
How Dental Implants Work
Dental Implants work on a natural phenomenon known as osseointegration. Osseointegration (from Latin osseus "bony" and integrare "to make whole") - Applied to oral implantology, this refers to bone grown right up to the implant surface. Primary stability of implants is because of screw like design, later long term stability is because of osseointegration.
Are Dental Implants Safe?
96% implants are made of metal alloy of titanium & vanadium. Titanium is being used in medical and dental for very long, it is light weight and very strong.
Some patients who are allergic to metal for them Zirconia implants are used. They have limited use considering strength & osseointegration of zirconia.
Implants are perfectly safe for the body with no adverse reaction. It poses no interference with X-ray or MRI. Titanium is used for hip and knee joint replacement as well as stent placed in heart.
Dental Implants Steps
Dental Implants is multi step procedure, spread over months. Ideal implant procedure takes 3-5 months but can last up to 9-10 months if bone condition is not suitable. During this time, patients can get temporary teeth depending on bone and implant stability.
Initial Consultation
Doctor reviews the patients suitability for getting implants. Clinical evaluation, medical history, 3D Xray (CBCT) & oral scan are used. If suitable, surgery is planned with start of pre-surgery regimen and blood report.
Implant Surgery
Implant surgery is minimally invasive, painless procedure done under local anesthesia. Depending on number of implants and other allied procedures being done can take between 45 min to 3-4 hrs. Patient can go home immediately after surgery
Osseointegration Phase
Bone integrates with implant and provides stability. This can last between 2-4 months, depending on design of implant and jaw - upper jaw 4 months, lower jaw 3 months. Zimmer TM Special Design Implant (2 months)
Prosthesis Phase
Final teeth phase can last up to 15 days. Implant integration and bone formation is reviewed through radiographs. Healing cap is placed over implant & measurement for final teeth are sent to lab. Trials are done and teeth are fixed
