5 Myths About Dentures — Busted by a Dentist in Gurgaon

Are dentures only for old people? Do they look fake? Do they last forever? I hear these every week at my clinic. Let me tell you the real truth — simply and honestly.

I am Dr. Jyoti Singh. I am a Prosthodontist — that means I am the dentist who has done 3 extra years of specialty training just for tooth replacement and dentures. Over 17 years and more than 10,000 cases, I have heard every wrong idea about dentures that exists.

These myths stop patients from getting the help they actually need. Some wait too long. Some feel ashamed for no reason. Some skip their check-ups thinking they no longer need one.

This article is just for one thing — to give you the real truth. Simply. Honestly. As your dentist.

Myth 01 False

“Dentures Are Only for Old People”

Fact: Dentures are for anyone whose teeth cannot be saved — at any age.

This is the most common thing I hear. Patients think you have to be 65 or older before a dentist will give you dentures. That is simply not true.

In my 17 years of practice, I have given dentures to patients in their 30s and 40s. Age has almost nothing to do with it.

What actually matters is the condition of your teeth — not your birthday.

You may need dentures at any age if your teeth:

  • Are too badly decayed or broken to be repaired
  • Cause pain every single time you eat or drink
  • Have been lost because of severe gum disease
  • Stop you from eating nutritious food properly
  • Were knocked out in an accident
Did You Know? Gum disease — one of the top reasons for tooth loss — affects nearly 1 in 5 adults over the age of 35 worldwide. (Source: WHO Global Oral Health Report, 2022.) It does not wait until you are old.

And here is the other side — not every elderly patient needs dentures either. Many of my patients in their 70s have all their natural teeth in perfect condition because they took care of them. Age alone tells you nothing.

The real question I ask is never “How old are you?” It is always “Can your teeth be saved?”

Myth 02 False

“More People Wear Dentures Today Than 50 Years Ago”

Fact: Fewer people need full dentures today — because dental awareness and care have improved.

Fifty years ago, when a tooth hurt, the answer was simple — pull it out. People did not know about brushing properly, flossing, or visiting the dentist before there was pain. Many lost all their teeth by the time they were 50.

Today, things are different. Fluoride toothpaste is common. People brush twice a day. Dentists can catch a problem early and save the tooth before it has to come out.

So full dentures have actually become less common over the past 50 years — not more.

Modern denture options available at CDIE Gurgaon — flexible, BPS and implant-supported
Modern denture technology has changed completely — flexible partials, BPS dentures, and implant-supported options are now available.

But Here Is the Other Side

While full dentures are less common, partial dentures and implant-supported options have grown. Patients today lose individual teeth because of lifestyle factors — sugary food, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, and years of avoiding the dentist.

So the type of tooth replacement people need has changed. The need itself has not gone away.

In my clinical experience: Most patients who come to me for dentures have not visited a dentist in 5 to 10 years. The tooth loss was very preventable. A simple check-up every 6 months would have changed everything.

The good news — modern dentures are far better than what your parents or grandparents wore. Today we have flexible partials, BPS precision dentures, and implant-retained options that look and feel nothing like old-style dentures.

Myth 03 False

“Dentures Look Fake — Everyone Will Know”

Fact: Modern, well-made dentures look completely natural. Most people around you will never know.

I understand this fear. Patients tell me — “Doctor, I don’t want people staring at my teeth and knowing.” Some even delay getting dentures for years because of this worry alone.

But the technology behind dentures has changed completely. This is not your grandfather’s denture.

Today’s dentures are made with:

  • High-quality acrylic and porcelain that closely copy the look of real teeth
  • Custom shade matching — the colour is matched to your skin tone and original tooth colour
  • Precise impressions of your gum and jaw — so the fit is exact to your mouth, not a generic mould
  • Natural gum texture and realistic tooth shape for each patient
In my clinical experience: When patients come back two weeks after getting dentures at CDIE, most say the same thing — “My own family didn’t notice, Doctor.” That is exactly the goal. Dentures that look like teeth, not like dentures.
So why do some dentures look so obvious?

Because they are cheap, old, or poorly made. Low-quality dentures sit badly on the gums, show too much pink acrylic, and shift when you talk or smile. That is not a problem with dentures as a category — that is a problem with quality and who made them.

A prosthodontist — a dentist specially trained for this — will always give you a more natural result than a general dentist doing dentures on the side. This is exactly why my specialty exists.

Myth 04 False

“Dentures Last Forever — I Will Never Need to Replace Them”

Fact: Dentures last 5 to 7 years. After that, they need to be replaced.

This is a very common mistake — and it causes real problems for patients who believe it.

Denture material, however good it is, is softer than natural tooth enamel. It wears down slowly over years of chewing. The teeth on your denture lose their shape and your bite becomes less effective without you realising it.

But there is something even more important. Your jaw bone changes shape after tooth loss. It slowly shrinks over the years. So a denture that fitted perfectly five years ago may feel loose today — not because the denture broke, but because your jaw has changed underneath it.

Think of it this way:

“Dentures are like a good pair of shoes. They fit perfectly when new. Over years of use, the sole wears down and the shape loosens. You can repair them once or twice — but eventually, you need a new pair.”

01
0 to 12 months

Minor adjustments needed as your gums settle into the new shape. At CDIE, the first year of adjustments and repairs is completely free.

02
Every 2 to 3 years

Relining may be needed — the inside of the denture is refitted to match the changed shape of your gum and jaw.

03
5 to 7 years

Visible wear on the denture teeth, noticeable looseness, or a changed bite means new dentures are recommended.

04
Anytime — if it breaks

If your denture cracks, chips, or breaks, come in immediately. Do not try to glue it yourself. Do not continue wearing a broken denture.

CDIE Policy: All dentures made at our clinic come with 1 year of free adjustments and repairs. Dentures made at other clinics are also welcome — we do relining, repairs, and adjustments.
Myth 05 False

“Once I Have Dentures, I Never Need to See a Dentist Again”

Fact: You still need regular check-ups — even if you have no natural teeth left at all.

This is perhaps the most dangerous myth on this list. When patients stop visiting the dentist after getting dentures, they miss checks that matter for their overall health — not just their teeth.

At every check-up for a denture wearer, I look at:

  • Oral cancer screening — even people with no teeth can get cancer of the gums, tongue, cheeks, or throat. Caught early, it is very treatable. Caught late, it is not.
  • Jaw bone levels — bone shrinks gradually after tooth loss. I track this over time so we can plan ahead if needed.
  • Denture fit — a loose denture causes painful sores and makes chewing very difficult. Most patients do not notice how much the fit has changed until I show them.
  • Gum tissue health — the gums under your denture can become inflamed or infected without any obvious signs.
  • Remaining natural teeth — for patients with partial dentures, I check all the teeth the denture clips onto.

A routine check-up for a denture wearer covers much more than just the denture itself.
My recommendation: Visit every 6 months as a denture wearer. In the first year after getting your dentures, I prefer to see patients every 3 months — that is when most adjustments are needed and problems are easiest to fix.

I see patients regularly who avoid check-ups for 2 or 3 years, then come back with cracked dentures, painful ulcers, or loose fits that have been causing problems for months. Every single one of those visits could have prevented it.

Quick Recap — All 5 Myths at a Glance

Here is a simple table you can share with anyone who still believes these myths.

The Myth The Real Truth
Dentures are only for old people Anyone with badly damaged teeth may need dentures — at any age
More people wear dentures today than before Full dentures are actually less common — better care has helped. But tooth loss itself is still very common.
Dentures look fake and unnatural Modern, specialist-made dentures look completely natural. Quality and fit are everything.
Dentures last forever They last 5 to 7 years. Relining is needed every 2 to 3 years as your jaw changes shape.
No need for a dentist after getting dentures Regular check-ups are still essential — for oral cancer screening, bone monitoring, gum health, and fit.

Patient Questions — Answered Directly

Each question below is a direct extension of one of the 5 myths above.

My doctor said I need dentures but I am only in my 30s. Is that really possible?

Yes — and it is more common than you think. Dentures are not decided by age. They are decided by whether your teeth can be saved. Severe gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, a bad accident, or years of avoiding the dentist can all lead to tooth loss at any age. If your dentist has recommended dentures, it means your teeth cannot be repaired — not that something is wrong with you because of how young you are.

If dental care has improved, why do so many people around me still wear dentures?

Because better dental care only helps the people who actually use it. In India, most people still visit the dentist only when there is pain. By then, the damage is usually too far gone to save the tooth. The patients who visit every 6 months rarely end up needing full dentures. The patients who come in only when something hurts very often do.

I have seen people whose dentures look very obvious. How is that possible if modern dentures look natural?

What you are seeing is almost certainly old dentures, cheap dentures, or poorly fitted dentures. Dentures made 10 to 15 years ago used completely different materials and techniques. Low-cost dentures made without proper impressions and shade matching will always look fake. Modern dentures made by a prosthodontist using good materials and precise fitting look nothing like that. The difference between a specialist and a general dentist doing dentures — and between a quality lab and a cheap one — is very visible.

My dentures are 8 years old and still feel okay. Why should I replace them?

“Feeling okay” and “working properly” are two very different things. After 8 years, the teeth on your denture are almost certainly worn flat. That changes your bite, puts extra strain on your jaw joints, and affects how well you actually chew. Your jaw bone has also changed shape significantly underneath — which means the denture is not sitting where it should be, even if it does not feel dramatically loose. Most patients who come in for assessment after this long are genuinely surprised by how much difference a new, well-fitted denture makes.

I have no natural teeth left. What exactly is a dentist checking at my appointment?

More than most people realise. Even with no natural teeth, I check for early signs of oral cancer on your gums, cheeks, tongue, and throat — this is genuinely life-saving when done regularly. I also monitor how your jaw bone is changing, assess whether your denture fit has shifted, and look at the health of your gum tissue underneath the denture. None of these things are visible to you at home. That is exactly why the check-up is important.

I am embarrassed to be young and need dentures. Will people judge me?

Please do not let embarrassment stop you from getting help. Tooth loss at a young age can happen because of gum disease, accidents, diabetes, or genetics. It is not something to be ashamed of. In my clinical experience, patients who delay getting dentures out of embarrassment suffer far more — they cannot eat properly, they avoid smiling, and the jaw bone loss gets worse over time making treatment harder later. Getting dentures early is the smart, healthy decision. And with modern dentures, nobody will know anyway.
